China: Deadly tornado hits Guangzhou region amid torrential rain kills 5, injures 33

China floods: Five people died and 33 were injured in the deadly tornado that hit Guangzhou in southern China. Sources has given this information quoting Chinese government media. Tornadoes with level-three intensity are being seen in Guangzhou, a city with a population of about 19 million people in southern China.

According to sources, 141 factory buildings were damaged in the tornado, but no residential house collapsed. Citing Xinhua, sources reported that there is a weather station in Liangtian village of Baiyun district, from where information about the tornado was received. The search and rescue operation was completed by 10 pm local time.

According to local media, four people have died due to floods in Guangdong earlier this week. According to sources report, life has become disrupted due to continuous torrential rains since April 16.

America has more tornadoes than China. A scientific article in 2015 reported that China experiences an average of around 100 tornadoes per year and at least 1,772 people have been killed by tornadoes in the country in the 50 years since 1961. At present, China Meteorological Agency has warned of heavy rain. Strong storms will continue till the end of this month.

Rains continue to batter Guangzhou province
The tornado hit several villages in Guangzhou’s Baiyun district. In one, packing material known as “pearl cotton” hung from buildings and trees, a report on the Southern Media website said. It blew into the compound of a nearby furniture company, where workers took shelter in a private home after the metal roof was ripped off their building, the news website reported. Workers were rolling up the material to be carted away for disposal on Sunday.

The disaster hit one week after heavy rains and flooding killed at least four people in Guangdong province. US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen visited Guangzhou during an official visit to China earlier in the month. The city, formerly known as Canton, also recently held the Canton Fair, a major export and import exhibition that draws buyers from around the world.

In September, two tornadoes killed 10 people in Jiangsu province in eastern China.
