Conspiracy to murder several leaders including Nupur Sharma, T Raja, accused Muslim cleric arrested from Surat

Surat: A senior police official said that Police arrested a man for allegedly plotting to kill a Hindu organisation leader in Surat, Gujarat, and threaten Sudarshan television channel’s chief editor, Telangana BJP MLA Raja Singh and former party spokesperson Nupur Sharma. Surat Police Commissioner Anupam Singh Gehlot identified the arrested accused as Maulvi Sohail Abubakar Timol (27).

The accused was hatching the conspiracy in connivance with his handlers based in Pakistan and Nepal. The accused worked as a manager in a thread factory and gave private tuitions on Islam to Muslim children. Gehlot said he was found conspiring with people from Pakistan and Nepal to give a contract of Rs 1 crore to kill Hindu Sanatan Sangh national president Updesh Rana and procure arms from Pakistan.

A crime branch release said that preliminary interrogation of the accused revealed that he was contacted by two persons named Dogar and Shahnaz, who had phone numbers of Pakistan and Nepal respectively. About this incident, Gehlot said, “After taking him into custody, we found several objectionable material in his mobile phone, including an offer of Rs 1 crore for the murder of Updesh Rana. For this, he was in constant touch with persons/numbers from Pakistan and Nepal.”

He also said, “Timol was also found involved in threatening Rana in March this year. The accused used a digital number from Laos to threaten the target (Rana) by adding numbers from Pakistan and Nepal in his group call.” He further said, “The photographs and other details found on his phone number reveal that they (accused and associates) were discussing on a secure app about targeting and threatening Sudarshan TV Editor-in-Chief Suresh Chavhanke, former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma and Hyderabad MLA Raja Singh. For this purpose, they were conspiring to collect funds and procure weapons.”
