Controversy erupts over videos of dance party inside Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara; Sikh leader seeks action

New Delhi: Controversy has erupted after reports of sacrilege in Kartarpur Sahib Gurudwara of Pakistan. BJP leader and former president of Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC) Manjinder Singh Sirsa has alleged that on October 18, Pakistani officers consumed liquor and non-veg in the premises of the Gurdwara. The incident has sparked outrage among the Sikh community and urged the Pakistan government to take immediate action against those involved.

“I strongly condemn the sacrilegious incident involving alcohol and meat consumption within the sacred premises of Gurudwara Sri Kartarpur Sahib. It’s particularly disheartening that the Kartarpur Gurdwara committee administration was involved in this,” Manjinder said.

The incident has sparked widespread outrage, with social media users and Sikh leaders expressing their perturbation and calling for accountability from the Pakistani authorities. Videos of the party were posted on social media, showing people dancing apparently in an intoxicated manner. The alleged involvement of Pakistan government officials in the event has further fuelled the controversy.

Leaders of prominent Sikh organisations, including the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and the Delhi Sikh Gurdwara Management Committee (DSGMC), have taken priority to the incident and stressed the need for a public apology from the organisers of the event. They have highlighted the significance of the Kartarpur Sahib Gurdwara for the Sikh community worldwide and stressed the importance of respecting its sanctity.

Manjinder Singh Sirsa, a former president of the DSGMC and BJP leader, castigated the purported dance party on the microblogging platform X. He also called on Sayed Abu Bakar Qureshi, CEO of the Kartarpur Corridor, to investigate the allegations of organising a non-vegetarian party at the Kartarpur Sahib complex. The event was reportedly attended by approximately 80 individuals, including Mohammad Sharukh, the district police officer from Narowal.

Both current DSGMC president Harmeet Singh Kalka and president of the SGPC Harjinder Singh Dhami, expressed worry about the incident and noted the video’s possible ramifications. President Dhami of the SGPC emphasises that the incident would be against ’maryada’ and Sikh sensibilities if it took place within the Gurdwara Kartarpur Sahib complex, especially in a location that is so strongly connected to Guru Nanak Dev.
