Delhi’s air quality sees slight improvement, but remains in ‘very poor’ category amid no rain

New Delhi: On Saturday, Delhi’s air quality showed slight improvement as it moved from the ‘severe’ category to the ‘very poor’ category with an overall AQI at 368. The overall AQI recorded at 8 am stood at 364, according to the System of Air Quality and Weather Forecasting And Research (SAFAR).

As per the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) data, some of the areas in the national capital recorded AQI above 400. Data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) recorded at 6 am showed that the air quality in the Lodhi Road area stood at 349.

At the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the AQI stood at 366, while the air quality was hovering at 388 in the Anand Vihar area. Notably, the air quality deteriorated two days after the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in Delhi on November 28 ordered the removal of GRAP Stage-III curbs in Delhi-NCR.

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMD), New Delhi, has predicted moderate fog in the morning with a minimum temperature of 12 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 25 degrees Celsius with a very low possibility of rain. The move paved the way for the removal of restrictions on the operation of BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers in Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Budh Nagar.

Earlier, the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) in the National Capital Region and Adjoining Areas on November 29 had lifted the pollution ban under Phase-III GRAP measures in the National Capital Region (NCR) following improvement in air quality.

Stage-III GRAP measures initially began on 2 November when AQI reached hazardous levels. These measures include a ban on non-essential construction activities in Delhi-NCR. Additionally, operation of older, more polluting vehicles, especially BS III petrol and BS IV diesel four-wheelers, was banned in key districts including Delhi, Gurugram, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Gautam Buddha Nagar.
