Election Commission Announces Schedule for Assembly Elections in Five States

Assembly Elections 2023: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the assembly elections in five states, including Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram. Here’s a breakdown of the election dates:

Chhattisgarh will have elections in two phases:

First phase: November 7
Second phase: November 17

Madhya Pradesh: November 17

Mizoram: November 7

Rajasthan: November 23

Telangana: November 30 (single-phase)

The counting of votes for all five states will take place on December 3, as announced by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar during a press conference. These elections hold significant importance as they precede the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

With the announcement of poll dates, the Model Code of Conduct is now in effect. The Mizoram assembly’s term ends on December 17, while the legislative assemblies of Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh have varying term end dates in January next year.

In terms of political parties in power:

Telangana is ruled by the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS).

Madhya Pradesh is under the governance of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan are led by the Congress party.

Rajiv Kumar noted that nearly 16 crore voters are eligible to participate in these five assembly elections. There will be a total of 1.77 lakh polling stations, with webcasting facilities available at 1.01 lakh of them. Over 8,000 polling stations will be managed by women.

The electorate for these elections includes 8.2 crore male voters, 7.8 crore female voters, and 60.2 lakh first-time voters. Kumar emphasized the significance of these elections for the country and hinted at the forthcoming announcement of Lok Sabha elections, which are expected in April-May next year.

We have engaged with all stakeholders, including political parties and enforcement agencies, in preparation for the assembly elections in Mizoram, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, MP, and Telangana, Kumar stated.
