Election Commission of India (ECI) is poised to announce the schedule for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections today. Scheduled for multiple phases, the polling will not only encompass the general elections but also include Assembly polls in four states: Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, and Arunachal Pradesh.
The ECI will convene a press conference at 3 pm to reveal the polling dates for both Lok Sabha and Assembly elections. Alongside, details regarding the establishment of polling booths nationwide and security arrangements for the electoral process will also be disclosed.
As the term of the current Lok Sabha concludes on June 16, the formation of a new House becomes imperative. Similarly, the assemblies of Andhra Pradesh, Sikkim, Arunachal Pradesh, and Odisha are set to dissolve on various dates in June.
Recalling past instances, the Lok Sabha polls were previously announced on March 10, commencing in seven phases from April 11, with the final vote count taking place on May 23.
With nearly 97 crore eligible voters across over 12 lakh polling stations, the upcoming elections are poised to be a significant democratic exercise. In the previous parliamentary elections, the BJP secured 303 seats, while the Congress managed 52, falling short of the numbers required to claim the Leader of the Opposition position in the Lok Sabha.
As the 2024 parliamentary elections loom, they are perceived as a crucial battle for the opposition, underscored by the high stakes for the I.N.D.I.A bloc.
