Flights suspended, thousands evacuated in Bangladesh, Myanmar as Cyclone Mocha makes landfall

Dhaka: Cyclone Mocha is gradually taking a dangerous form. According to the World Meteorological Organization, Mocha from the Bay of Bengal is now moving towards Bangladesh and Myanmar coast. Thousands of people living in low-lying areas in Myanmar and Bangladesh have fled their homes and taken shelter in safer places on Saturday. The government has also completed preparations regarding this. These include thousands of Rohingya refugees. On the other hand, in Myanmar’s Rakhine, about 10,000 people have left their homes due to the fear of Mocha. Myanmar Airways International said all its flights to Rakhine state had been suspended until Monday.

Mocha storm warning has been issued in Myanmar’s Rakhine state and northwestern region. According to the United Nations Office of Humanitarian Assistance, the Mocha storm will have a bad effect on 1.2 million displaced people in Myanmar. WMO spokesperson Claire Nullis has said in a press conference that it is a very dangerous cyclone. This will badly affect the lives of Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh.

55 shelter homes have been built on Bangladesh’s safest Bhasan Char island where about 30,000 Rohingya refugees have been shifted. Mocha is raising concerns in Bangladesh’s coastal areas and ports. The Bangladesh Meteorological Office has raised the danger signal to eight degrees, considering the storm warning as a major threat to three ports and 12 districts. These three ports are Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar and Payra.

Meteorological officials have warned people to stay away from the coastal areas. The department has said that during this time there is a possibility of winds blowing at a speed of 140 to 160 kilometers per hour.

The threat of mocha in the northeastern states has not been completely averted yet. Heavy rain warning has been issued for Tripura and Mizoram on May 14 as well. Heavy rains are also expected in Nagaland, Manipur and South Assam. In view of the seriousness of the storm in Bengal, NDRF has deployed eight teams.

According to sources, due to Mocha, the flight (UK747) of private airlines company Vistara from Kolkata to Port Blair on Saturday was made to land back in Kolkata. Due to Mocha, the flight was turned back due to sudden bad weather at Port Blair.
