Former Law Minister and senior advocate Shanti Bhushan passed away at the age of 97. Shanti Bhushan was also associated with many social and political movements.

New Delhi: Former Law Minister and senior advocate Shanti Bhushan passed away at the age of 97. Shanti Bhushan was also associated with many social and political movements. From 1977 to 1979, during the Prime Ministership of Morarji Desai, he was made the Law Minister of the country. He took part in the movement during emergency. Even in the later period, he participated in many movements against corruption. Shanti Bhushan was also known as a constitutional expert. He was running ill for some time.

Shanti Bhushan had been a lawyer in Rajnarayan’s Allahabad High Court against Indira Gandhi. After the decision, there was a political upheaval in the country and Indira Gandhi had to step down. His son Prashant Bhushan is also a senior advocate of the Supreme Court.

President Draupadi Murmu expressed condolences
President Draupadi Murmu has also condoled the death of Shanti Bhushan. The President tweeted, ‘An era has passed in the death of great lawyer and former Union Law Minister Shanti Bhushan ji. He always stood up for his beliefs. Along with jurisprudence, he used to leave his mark on politics as well. Condolences to his family and friends.

PM Modi tweeted
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had expressed grief over the death of Shanti Bhushan. PM tweeted, ‘Shanti Bhushan will always be remembered for his contribution in the field of law. He always supported the downtrodden and fought for them. Saddened by his departure. My deepest condolences to the family members. om Shanti.’

Shanti Bhushan was also a member of the Rajya Sabha from 14 July 1977 to 2 April 1980. In 1980, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. In 1986, when the Bharatiya Janata Party did not accept his advice on an election petition, he resigned from the party. Shanti Bhushan and his son Prashant Bhushan were actively involved in the Anna movement.
