Berlin: Germany and the football world at large is mourning the loss of legendary player Franz Beckenbauer, who passed away in his sleep on Monday at the age of 78. His illustrious career is a testament to his unique skills and leadership as both a player and coach. Beckenbauer’s legacy is one of extraordinary achievements, including the rare feat of winning the FIFA World Cup on and off the field.

Beckenbauer, known as ‘Der Kaiser’, redefined the role of the defender in football. He led West Germany to World Cup glory in 1974 as captain and repeated the feat from the manager’s bench in 1990. Twice named European Footballer of the Year, he earned 103 caps for West Germany, testament to his extraordinary talent and influence. His achievements in club football were equally impressive, with notable contributions at Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund.

Tributes poured in from all around the world for Beckenbauer, who appeared for West Germany in 103 matches.

78-year-old Beckenbauer, one of the three men to win the FIFA World Cup as a player and as a coach as well, was a towering figure on the football field for West Germany and Bayern Munich in the 1960s and 70s. Beckenbauer went on to win the World Cup in 1974 while leading West Germany and won the elusive trophy for his country once again as a coach in 1990.

Beckenbauer’s influence on football extended far beyond his individual achievements. He is credited with shaping the modern game, reimagining the role of the defender, and influencing future generations of players and coaches. Despite later allegations of bribery, which he denied, his lasting influence in the field of football remains undisputed.

Beckenbauer’s death was announced by German newswire dpa, citing a statement issued by his family. The news sparked a wave of tributes from the global football community, including former teammates, the German Football Association and even former opponents. His demise is seen as a significant moment in the history of the sport, marking the end of an era.
