In a shocking incident in Valsad, Gujarat, Vijay Pandey (45) allegedly killed his wife and 11-year-old daughter by pushing them into the Varoli river before attempting to end his own life. Local residents, however, rescued Pandey after he was found clinging onto a pillar under a bridge near Humran village.
Umargam police station officials disclosed that during interrogation, Pandey confessed to the heinous act, stating that he pushed his wife, Gayatridevi (40), who suffered from epilepsy, and his mentally-ill daughter, Gauri, to their deaths.
Local swimmers recovered the bodies from the river, prompting authorities to investigate whether the incident was accidental, a suicide attempt, or a deliberate act of murder. The police are working to unravel the motive behind this tragic event.
Initially, Pandey told the police that he, along with his wife and daughter, went to offer prayers at a Shiva temple on Wednesday afternoon. He later claimed they went to view the river from a bridge, where he allegedly pushed them to their deaths. Pandey attempted to end his own life but survived by clinging to a pillar, leading to his rescue.
On Thursday, the police registered a case of accidental death. However, Pandey’s revelation during questioning led to a shift in the charges, and he was subsequently arrested on charges of murder. The accused cited frustration with caring for his wife’s epilepsy and his daughter’s mental illness as the motive behind the tragic act. The community remains stunned as authorities delve deeper into the investigation.
