India Records Highest Single-Day Spike in Covid 19 Cases in Seven Months with 841 New Infections

India witnessed its sharpest surge in COVID-19 cases in seven months as the country reported 841 fresh infections on Sunday, marking the highest single-day rise since May 19, according to the health ministry's daily bulletin.

India witnessed its sharpest surge in Covid-19 cases in seven months as the country reported 841 fresh infections on Sunday, marking the highest single-day rise since May 19, according to the health ministry’s daily bulletin. The resurgence in cases has elevated the active cases to 4,309, with three new fatalities reported in the last 24 hours—one each from Kerala, Karnataka, and Bihar.

The daily case count had dwindled to double digits until December 5, but a resurgence has been observed following the emergence of a new variant and the onset of cold weather conditions. At the pandemic’s peak in early 2020, daily numbers reached the lakhs, contributing to over 4.5 crore infections and more than 5.3 lakh deaths over approximately four years.

India’s recovery rate remains high at 98.81%, with over 4.4 crore people having recuperated from the disease. The health ministry’s website reports the administration of 220.67 crore doses of COVID-19 vaccines across the country.

Kerala, a day earlier, reported the highest number of JN.1 variant cases, a subvariant of Omicron. The state recorded 41 cases of the JN.1 subvariant, primarily involving home-isolated individuals. The WHO has identified JN.1 as a Variant of Interest (VOI) and has reported over 7,000 cases worldwide.

With the surge in cases, the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi issued guidelines for suspected or positive COVID-19 cases reported at hospitals. The focus is on monitoring the new Omicron Subvariant JN.1, a descendant of the BA.2.86 or Pirola subvariant. Kerala reported the first case of the JN.1 variant, and the Health Ministry has detected a total of 109 cases of the JN.1 subvariant in India as of Wednesday. Authorities at both central and state levels are closely monitoring the situation ahead of the New Year.
