New Delhi: India recorded 756 fresh cases of Covid in the last 24 hours, with the number of active cases standing at 4,049, according to the health ministry. The latest data, updated at 8 am, also revealed five deaths—two each from Kerala and Maharashtra, and one from Jammu and Kashmir.
After a significant drop in daily cases till December 5, 2023, a surge was noted, attributed to the emergence of a new variant and cold weather conditions. The maximum increase in single-day cases occurred on December 31, 2023, with 841 reported cases.
Official sources indicated that the JN.1 variant is not causing an exponential rise in new cases, hospitalizations, or mortality. Of the total active cases, approximately 92% are under home isolation. India has witnessed three waves of COVID-19, with the peak reported during the Delta wave in April-June 2021.
Since the beginning of the pandemic in early 2020, India has seen over 4.5 crore infections and over 5.3 lakh deaths. The number of recoveries stands at over 4.4 crore, with a national recovery rate of 98.81%, as per the ministry’s website.
