Indian Medical Association says avoid antibiotics for seasonal cold and cough amid rising virus cases

New Delhi: With the changing weather in the country, the threat of H3N2 virus is increasing. People are showing very common symptoms of cough, cold and fever, but these problems have troubled people a lot. This seemingly trivial disease has gradually taken over hundreds of people.

Meanwhile, the Indian Medical Association (IMA) has given important advice regarding the use of antibiotics for patients with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever, body pain during seasonal cold and cough.

The IMA quoted the National Center for Disease Control (NCDC) as saying that fever that progresses for three days at the end of three weeks with persistent cough and most of these cases are due to the H3N2 influenza virus.

The IMA recommends symptomatic treatment for these colds and coughs—medical treatments or symptom-inducing medications and antibiotics to avoid. The IMA advises to first confirm what type of virus it is and how dangerous it is.IMA wants to give permission to use these drugs only after investigation.

The IMA has strictly advised people not to take more antibiotics. It is better that people suffering from cough, fever in this season should immediately see a doctor and get proper treatment. However, now a days people start taking antibiotics like Azithromycin and Amoxiclav etc., that too without any doctor’s advice.

After using the medicine, people are also getting relief from the problem of cough for some time, after which they are also stopping taking medicine from their mind.In such a situation, the IMA said that it needs to be stopped as it leads to antibiotic resistance.

The IMA said in a statement that whenever antibiotics are actually used, they will not work because of resistance. The statement further said that many antibiotics are being prescribed by doctors despite it not being the exact symptom of the virus.

It accounts for about 70 percent of diarrhea cases in which doctors prescribe antibiotics for the patient.Among these antibiotics, the most commonly used antibiotics are amoxicillin, norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin, levofloxacin, while they are used for the treatment of diarrhea and UTI infections.
