In a recent development, a Delhi court has granted permission to incarcerated Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader, Sanjay Singh, allowing him to sign essential documents for his Rajya Sabha re-nomination. The term of Sanjay Singh as a member of the Rajya Sabha concludes on January 27.

The application for permission to obtain Singh’s signatures on an ‘Undertaking,’ required for acquiring a ‘No Dues Certificate’ from the Rajya Sabha, was filed in Delhi’s Rouse Avenue Court. Special Judge MK Nagpal passed the order, considering the urgency of Singh’s situation. The Returning Officer had issued a notice on January 2 for the upcoming election, and nominations are required to be submitted by January 9.

The court’s order, delivered on Thursday, stated, “If the documents are presented by counsel for the accused before jail authorities on January 6, 2024, the jail superintendent shall ensure that the signatures of the accused are permitted to be taken on said documents, and he is also permitted to meet his Counsel for half-an-hour to discuss the modalities in connection with filing of the said nomination.”

Sanjay Singh, who has been in custody since October 4 on charges related to alleged financial irregularities, vehemently denies the accusations. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) claims that Singh played a pivotal role in the formulation and implementation of a now-scrapped excise policy, benefiting specific liquor entities for financial considerations. Despite these allegations, Singh is actively pursuing his Rajya Sabha re-nomination, and this recent court order allows him to fulfill the necessary procedural requirements during his period of detention.
