In a devastating turn of events, a fierce storm swept through parts of Jalpaiguri district in northern West Bengal, resulting in the tragic loss of five lives and leaving over 100 individuals injured. As rescue efforts intensify, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee personally visited the cyclone victims at Jalpaiguri Super Specialty Hospital, offering her support and condolences.

Banerjee, addressing the press during her visit, confirmed the casualty count and highlighted the critical condition of two individuals among the injured. She expressed deep concern over the widespread damage caused to numerous houses by the cyclone’s force.

In response to the crisis, Banerjee emphasized the swift mobilization of civil administration, police, and disaster management personnel to provide relief and aid to the affected communities.

Expressing her sorrow over the calamitous events, Banerjee assured that compensation would be provided to the families of the deceased and assistance extended to the injured, adhering to established protocols and the model code of conduct.

The storm’s impact was particularly severe in areas such as Rajarhat, Barnish, Bakali, Jorpakdi, Madhabdanga, and Saptibari, resulting in extensive damage to residential structures, uprooting of trees, and disruption of essential services like electricity.

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered his condolences and assured support to those affected. He urged BJP party workers in Bengal to extend assistance to the impacted communities.

The deceased individuals were identified as Dijendra Narayan Sarkar, Anima Burman, Jagen Roy, and Samar Roy. Many others sustained injuries, including pedestrians struck by hailstones.

Efforts are underway to provide medical attention to the injured, with several individuals admitted to hospitals for treatment. An emergency cell has been established at the Raj Bhavan to coordinate relief efforts.

Governor Dhupguri MLA Nirmal Chandra Roy has been actively involved in addressing the situation, coordinating with disaster management authorities to ensure prompt assistance to Jalpaiguri. He is set to visit the affected areas personally to assess the extent of the damage and offer support to the affected residents.
