Karnataka Health Department Alert: Two BMCRI Students Test Positive for Cholera

The Karnataka Health and Family Welfare Department has issued an alert following the confirmation of two cases of cholera among students at Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute (BMCRI). The government is taking precautionary measures to prevent further spread of the disease.

Two BMCRI Students Test Positive for Cholera

After two students from BMCRI tested positive for cholera, health officials are closely monitoring the situation. The BMCRI hostel kitchen is being disinfected, and pest control measures are being implemented as part of preventive actions.

The incident occurred shortly after 47 students from BMCRI were hospitalized with symptoms resembling cholera. Dr. Padma MR confirmed that two students’ cultures returned positive for cholera. The Medical Education Department’s Principal Secretary and the Women’s Commission Chairperson visited the hospital and the girls’ hostel in response to the situation.

Dean and Director of BMCRI, Ramesh Krishna, provided updates on the situation, stating that all hospitalized students were diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis. Treatment, including antibiotics and IV fluids, is being administered to affected students.

Preventive measures in the girls’ hostel include kitchen disinfection, sourcing food and water from Victoria Hospital, and pest control. Despite reports suggesting a potential cholera outbreak due to extreme heat and water scarcity, the Health Department clarified that the reported cases are sporadic and not indicative of an outbreak. As of now, six cholera cases have been reported in the state this year, with no evidence of widespread transmission.
