Kerala reported 300 new active cases of COVID-19 and recorded 3 deaths on December 20, according to the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. The total number of active cases in India currently stands at 2,669.
In response to concerns over the new variant of the Coronavirus, a health expert in Kerala stated that COVID-19 is similar to other communicable diseases and cannot be completely eradicated. Dr. Sreejith N Kumar emphasized that while COVID-19 remains, the strike rate has reduced, likening it to a common influenza or cold.
Union Health Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya chaired a high-level meeting to review the COVID-19 situation in India. Emphasizing the need to be prepared for new virus strains, he urged all states to remain vigilant, increase surveillance, and ensure sufficient stocks of medical supplies, including medicines, oxygen, ventilators, and vaccines.
Dr. Mandaviya stressed the importance of joint efforts between the Centre and States for efficient COVID-19 management. He proposed regular mock drills every three months at both central and state levels to share best practices. The minister also called for creating awareness, managing the epidemic, and disseminating accurate information.
In response to the rise in respiratory diseases and the emergence of the new JN.1 COVID sub-variant, the World Health Organization (WHO) acknowledged the virus’s evolution. WHO urged member states to maintain strong surveillance and share sequencing information as the virus continues to change.
