Holi manifests diverse traditions across the country, yet within the precincts of Nandgaon and Barsana – nestled near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh – a distinctive custom unfolds. Here, the denizens celebrate Lathmar Holi, a tradition harking back to Lord Krishna’s playful interactions with Goddess Radha and her companions.

Legend has it that Lord Krishna’s mischievous antics would evoke playful ire from the women of Barsana and Nandgaon, prompting them to rebuff his advances by playfully wielding sticks and driving him away. This timeless tradition finds expression each Holi.

On the day of Holi, men jest with women, who retaliate by brandishing sticks in jest, symbolizing the playful exchange of affection. Those caught in the whims of the women are garbed as women themselves, parading through the streets in jovial revelry. This whimsical tradition endears itself to the hearts of the people of Nandgaon and Barsana year after year.

Holi, slated for March 25 this year, is preceded by Holika Dahan or Chhoti Holi, observed the day prior. As the festival draws near, anticipation mounts, heralding a spectacle of joyous camaraderie and cultural fervor.
