Maldives Tourism Body Condemns Offensive Comments Against PM Modi, Highlights Strong Indo-Maldivian Ties

The Maldives Association of Tourism Industry (MATI) has strongly denounced derogatory remarks made by officials in the Maldives against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the people of India amid an ongoing dispute. Emphasizing India’s pivotal role as a close neighbor and ally, MATI highlighted India’s historical assistance in various crises and its consistent contribution to the Maldives’ tourism industry.

In an official statement, MATI expressed gratitude for India’s continuous support, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic recovery phase. The association acknowledged India’s significant role in being one of the top markets for Maldivian tourism and expressed a sincere desire for the enduring relationship between the two nations.

The controversy arose when Maldives deputy minister and other government officials made disrespectful comments about PM Modi’s visit to Lakshadweep on January 2. Despite the Maldives government distancing itself from these remarks, the incident triggered a social media uproar.

Indian figures, including cricketers and film celebrities, rallied in support of promoting local destinations and beach tourism, endorsing PM Modi’s call for exploring Lakshadweep’s beauty. The Maldivian Minister of Foreign Affairs Moosa Zameer condemned the offensive remarks, stating they do not reflect the official position of the Maldives government.

In response, the Indian High Commissioner to Maldives, Munu Mahawar, held a pre-arranged meeting with Ambassador at Large Ali Naseer Mohamed at the Maldivian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The diplomatic engagement aims to discuss bilateral issues and maintain positive dialogue between the two nations.

Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih also joined the conversation, condemning the use of hateful language against India. He emphasized India’s longstanding friendship with the Maldives and urged against allowing such remarks to impact the strong bond between the two countries.
