Mark Zuckerberg, the CEO of Meta Platforms Inc., recently underwent knee surgery due to a torn ligament he suffered during a mixed martial arts (MMA) training session. In an Instagram post, the 39-year-old tech magnate shared the news, revealing that he tore his ACL during his MMA training in preparation for a competitive fight early next year. The post included a series of photos depicting Zuckerberg in a hospital bed with his knee bandaged and braced.

Zuckerberg initially took up MMA during the pandemic, and his commitment to the sport has evolved significantly. He even constructed an octagonal fighting ring in his backyard. In May, he participated in a Brazilian jiu-jitsu competition at Woodside High School, where he secured both gold and silver medals.

Notably, Zuckerberg’s MMA journey hasn’t been without its share of intense moments. Last month, he posted a photo showcasing black eyes and a bruised nose, humorously mentioning that “sparring got a little out of hand.”

During the summer, there was talk of a potential cage match between Zuckerberg and Tesla CEO Elon Musk after a heated exchange on social media. However, Zuckerberg later stated that Musk “isn’t serious” about the fight and announced his intention to focus on competing with individuals who take the sport seriously.

It’s worth noting that Meta Platforms Inc. allocates substantial resources to ensure Zuckerberg’s security. The company had planned to increase its annual pre-tax spending on Zuckerberg’s personal security to $14 million, up from the previous $10 million, as reported in a February regulatory filing. This amount does not encompass additional security-related expenses incurred on Zuckerberg’s behalf by the company .
