Gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari has been sentenced to life imprisonment in a significant ruling by the Varanasi MP-MLA Court Special Judge Avnish Gautam. The verdict comes in connection with a fake arms license case dating back to 1990, where Ansari, along with arms clerk Gauri Shankar Lal, was accused of obtaining a license through fraudulent means while serving as an MLA.

Ansari, who has a notorious criminal record with 65 cases, including murder, extortion, and criminal conspiracy, lodged against him across various police stations in Uttar Pradesh, has been convicted in seven of these cases. He has been incarcerated in Banda jail since 2021 after being transferred from a Punjab jail.
This recent sentence adds to Ansari’s legal woes, as in December 2023, he was handed a five-and-a-half-year prison term for issuing a death threat to a coal trader back in 1997. Alongside the imprisonment, a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on Ansari for threatening Mahaveer Prasad Ranguta, a Varanasi resident.
Mukhtar Ansari gets Life Sentence. Despite his confinement, Ansari’s legal battles continue, with court proceedings conducted via video conferencing. Notably, he was a five-time MLA from the Mau assembly constituency but did not contest the 2022 assembly elections, with his seat subsequently won by his son Abbas Ansari under the Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party (SBSP) banner.
