Nagaland Elections 2023: Neiphiu Rio set to create history by becoming CM for the fifth consecutive term

Nagaland Elections: 70-year-old Neiphiu Rio has broken the record of veteran leader SC Jamir with this victory.

Nagaland Elections 2023: Neiphiu Rio set to create history by becoming CM for the fifth consecutive term

Nagaland Elections Result: BJP and NDPP alliance has won big in Nagaland. Here the alliance has got 37 seats. Neiphiu Rio, who is said to be a strong face in Nagaland politics, is all set to take over as the Chief Minister for the fifth consecutive term.

With this victory, 70-year-old Neiphiu Rio broke the record of veteran leader SC Jamir. Who had led the North Eastern state thrice. Neiphiu Rio won North Angami II seat in Kohima district by defeating Seivili Sachu of INC by a margin of 15,824 votes. He got 17,045 votes, while Sachu had to be satisfied with less than 1,500 votes.

About Neiphiu Rio
Born in an Angami Naga family on November 11, 1950, Neiphiu Rio received his early education at the Baptist English School in Kohima and then went on to study at the Sainik School, Purulia in West Bengal. He later studied at St. Joseph’s College, Darjeeling and returned to Kohima Arts College to complete his graduation.

He was an active student leader during his school and college days. He entered politics at a very young age. He started his nearly five-decade-long political career as the president of the youth wing of the United Democratic Front in Kohima district in 1974 and later became the president of Nagaland.

Fought 8 elections, lost only one
Neiphiu Rio has so far contested 8 times. He lost his first election only in 1987. He contested as an independent candidate at that time. In 1989, he joined the Congress, after which a lot of progress was seen in his political life. After his first temporary victory, he did not look back and won consecutive elections.

He was made the Home Minister of the state in 2002. However, in the same year he left the Congress and played a key role in reviving the cock symbol of the Naga People’s Front (NPF).

Neiphiu Rio succeeded in ousting SC Jamir and became chief minister for the first time in 2003. However, he was sacked as Chief Minister in January 2008 when President’s rule was imposed in the state.
