Nagaland’s Tapi Assembly Constituency to Hold Bypoll on November 7

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially announced the schedule for the upcoming bypoll in Nagaland’s Tapi assembly constituency. This crucial election is set to take place on November 7, 2023.

The vacancy in the 43-Tapi Assembly Constituency, located in Mon District, emerged following the unfortunate passing of its sitting MLA, Noke Wangnao, at the age of 87 in August of this year. Wangnao, a 10-time MLA, succumbed to a brief illness at a hospital in Dimapur on August 28.

Noke Wangnao had previously been elected as a candidate of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) during the Nagaland assembly elections held in February. Following his election, he served as an advisor for the Social Welfare Department until his untimely demise.

The Election Commission of India has laid out a specific timeline for the bypoll process. The issuance of the gazette notification is scheduled for October 13, 2023. Prospective candidates have until October 20 to submit their nominations, while the last date for withdrawal of candidatures is set for October 23, providing ample time for candidates to make their intentions clear.

Furthermore, the crucial counting of votes for the Tapi assembly constituency bypoll is scheduled for December 3, 2023. It’s noteworthy that this counting will coincide with the vote tallying in other key states such as Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Telangana, and Mizoram. This synchronized timing underscores the significance of the upcoming election in Nagaland’s Tapi assembly constituency as part of the broader electoral landscape in the country.
