Nine children killed as landmine explodes in Southeastern afghanistan

Kabul: On Monday, a provincial official said that Nine children were killed in an explosion in southeastern Afghanistan that was caused by a landmine planted during the country’s decades-long conflict.

The provincial head of the information and culture department Hamidullah Nisar said that the landmine went off while some young boys and girls were playing in the Geru district of Ghazni province on Sunday.

Nisar told media,”A landmine left over from the time of the Russian invasion exploded while they were playing with it.” “Unfortunately, nine children died.”

Ghazni police said the five girls and four boys were aged four to ten. Many parts of Afghanistan are littered with mines, grenades and mortars left over from decades of conflict, dating back to the Soviet invasion in 1979, the civil war that followed and the 20-year Taliban insurgency against foreign-backed governments.

In August 2021, Violence has decreased dramatically since the Taliban seized power and ended their insurgency. However, unexploded bombs and landmines still regularly kill people, with the International Committee of the Red Cross saying children are the main victims.

On social media platform X local police reported that another child was killed and five others injured when an unexploded bomb exploded in Herat province on Sunday.
