In a strategic move following his recent trust vote victory, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has decided to nominate former minister from JDU, Sanjay Jha, for a Rajya Sabha seat, according to sources.
The BJP has already announced the names of its two candidates from Bihar, former ministers Bhim Singh and Dharamsheela Gupta. Together, these three candidates will file their nominations on February 14.
The decision to nominate Sanjay Jha comes on the heels of the NDA’s successful trust vote in the state assembly, during which 129 MLAs voted in favor of the motion, despite a walkout by all non-NDA members. Sanjay Jha, known to be a close confidant of Nitish Kumar, is expected to play a crucial role in representing the party’s interests in the upper house.
Out of the six seats up for grabs, three each are held by the ruling NDA and the ‘Mahagathbandhan’, which has now transitioned to the opposition camp following Nitish Kumar’s latest move. The MPs whose terms are nearing expiry include representatives from JDU, BJP, RJD, and Congress.
Voting for the Rajya Sabha seats is slated for February 27, with voting taking place from 9 am to 4 pm and counting commencing thereafter. With the current assembly composition favoring the NDA, it is anticipated that three of its nominees will secure election to the upper house with ease.
