Legal Action Against Serum Institute After Daughter’s Alleged Covishield Death. The parents of a woman who reportedly died after getting Covishield are thinking about suing the Serum Institute of India (SII) after AstraZeneca, a British pharmaceutical company, admitted in court that its vaccine can cause rare side effects. Covishield, created by AstraZeneca and Oxford University, was made by the Serum Institute of India and widely used in the country.
Venugopalan Govindan’s daughter Karunya died in July 2021 after receiving the Covishield vaccine. However, a national committee set up by the government said there wasn’t enough evidence to say her death was caused by the vaccine.
Earlier, some parents had gone to court blaming the vaccine for their children’s deaths. They filed a petition against the government and the authorities who approved the vaccine. The Serum Institute was not involved in those cases.
The Oxford–AstraZeneca Covid vaccine was sold worldwide under the brand names ‘Covishield’ and ‘Vaxzevria’, among others.
The UK lawsuit was started by Jamie Scott, who had a permanent brain injury after getting the AstraZeneca vaccine in April 2021.
The AstraZeneca-Oxford vaccine is no longer given in the UK because of safety worries. Although studies have shown it works against Covid-19, rare side effects have led to regulatory scrutiny and legal action.
The special thing is that Covishield was jointly prepared by AstraZeneca and Oxford University. It was developed by the Serum Institute of India (SII) in India or introduced to people on a large scale. Oxford AstraZeneca Covid vaccine was introduced in many countries of the world under the names of Vaxzevria and Covishield.
