Patanjali Navratna Elaichi Soan Papdi has failed a quality test, leading to the arrest and sentencing of three individuals, including an assistant manager of Patanjali Ayurved Ltd. The incident began in 2019 when a food safety inspector raised concerns about the sweet sold at Lila Dhar Pathak’s shop in Pithoragarh, Uttarakhand. Subsequent tests at a Rudrapur laboratory confirmed the substandard quality, resulting in legal actions.
In December 2020, the Rudrapur lab notified the state food safety department about the substandard sweet. Legal cases were filed against shop owner Lila Dhar Pathak, distributor Ajay Joshi, and Patanjali’s assistant manager Abhishek Kumar. The court fined them ₹5,000, ₹10,000, and ₹25,000 respectively and sentenced them to six months in prison.
Recently, the Supreme Court asked Patanjali if they had stopped selling 14 products whose licenses were suspended by the Uttarakhand State Licensing Authority. Senior advocate Balbir Singh confirmed the sales had stopped. Patanjali’s lawyers, including Balkrishna and Ramdev, were given three weeks to file reports about recalling advertisements for the suspended products.
The court stated that Ramdev and Balkrishna do not need to appear in court unless ordered. The court is still deciding on the contempt notice against Patanjali Ayurved Ltd, Balkrishna, and Ramdev.
