New Delhi: The Supreme Court is all set to hear a plea seeking the formation of an independent commission to probe the killing of mafia Atiq Ahmed and several other encounters in Uttar Pradesh. A bench headed by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud has posted the case for hearing on April 24.

This petition has been filed by lawyer Vishal Tiwari, in which the investigation of 183 encounters in Uttar Pradesh since 2017 has been demanded by an expert committee under the supervision of a retired judge of the Supreme Court. Along with this, former IPS officer Amitabh Thakur has also approached the Supreme Court for a CBI investigation into the murder case. He has demanded the court to get the CBI to investigate the murder case. He says that to get to the bottom of the matter, it is very important to conduct an investigation with the CBI.

60-year-old Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ashraf, 60, were being taken to a medical college in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh for examination when three assailants disguised as journalists opened fire on them. A few hours before the incident, Ahmed’s son Asad, who was killed along with an accomplice in a police encounter in Jhansi on April 13, was cremated.

The Uttar Pradesh Police on Friday said it has killed 183 alleged criminals in encounters in the six years of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s government, including Asad and his associates. The petition has requested the formation of an independent expert committee to probe the murders of Atiq and Ashraf.
