Pitbull attack in Delhi: One-and-half year old receives multiple fractures, 18 stitches by pitbull in Burari

New Delhi: In Delhi’s Burari area, a neighborhood walk turned into a nightmare for a family as their one-and-a-half-year-old daughter was brutally attacked by a pitbull. The incident, which took place in Uttarakhand Colony on January 2, was a horrifying scene, captured on CCTV, as the child’s leg was broken in three places by the pitbull’s powerful jaws.

A baby girl was grabbed by a Pit Bull dog from her grandfather’s lap and bitten on her leg. A CCTV footage of the Pit Bull attack has been shared with the police. The one-and-a-half-year-old girl received stitches on many parts of her leg, and suffered three fractures, her parents said.

Following the horrific incident, the girl required 18 stitches and a 17-day hospital stay to recover from her injuries. Even the efforts of seven to eight people present at the spot could not save the child from the severity of the attack. The horrific incident has created a wave of fear and anxiety within the community, raising questions over security in the colony.

In a sad turn of events, the family’s plea at Burari police station to register a case against the pitbull owner faced opposition. The family has alleged that they were pressurized to compromise, which further increased their problems. The girl’s grandfather, recalling his own ordeal and previous incidents where three family members were bitten by dogs, called for pit bulls to be removed from the neighbourhood.

In India, the Pitbull is classified as a “dangerous” breed. It is illegal to keep them as pets, this fact has come to light after this incident. The central government had earlier informed the Delhi High Court about its upcoming decision to ban licenses for such breeds within three months.

This tragic incident has highlighted the desperate need for swift action on this issue and strict regulations around the ownership of potentially dangerous breeds. It also highlights the challenges faced by victims in getting justice.
