Prominent Candidates, from Chief Minister to Speaker, Emerge for Chhattisgarh Elections

The Congress has nominated Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel for his conventional seat, while the BJP has put forward Bhupesh Baghel's nephew and MP Vijay Baghel as his opponent.

The second phase of Assembly elections in Chhattisgarh is scheduled for November 17, covering the remaining 70 seats of the 90-member assembly. With over 18,800 polling stations in place, a total of 958 candidates are vying for these 70 seats. Among them, Raipur City West Assembly constituency has the highest number of candidates, with 26 contestants, while Daundilohara constituency has the lowest with four contestants. The Patan Assembly constituency is poised for a triangular contest involving the Congress, BJP, and Janata Congress Chhattisgarh.

In the upcoming second phase of polling in Chhattisgarh, Congress has nominated Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel for his traditional seat, facing BJP’s candidate Vijay Baghel, who is also Baghel’s nephew and MP. In the Patan seat, Janata Congress Chhattisgarh has put forward Amit Jogi, son of the party’s chief and former chief minister Ajit Jogi.

Key constituencies in this phase include Ambikapur, Raipur City South, Korba, Sakti, Durg Rural, and Lormi. Deputy Chief Minister TS Singh Deo, representing Congress, will seek re-election in Ambikapur against BJP’s Rajesh Agrawal. Sakti will witness a contest between Congress’ Charan Das Mahant and BJP’s Khilawan Sahu. In Raipur City South, former home minister Brij Mohan Agrawal is contesting for BJP, while Congress has fielded Mahant Ram Sundar.

BJP has nominated its state chief and MP Arun Sao for the Lormi constituency, while Congress has put forward Thaneshwar Sahu.

In the Korba Assembly constituency, Congress has selected Jai Singh Agrawal, the current Revenue Minister of the state, as its candidate, while BJP has chosen party vice president Lakhanlal Dewangan.

Union Minister and MP Renuka Singh is set to contest from the Bharatpur-Sonhat Assembly constituency, where Congress has fielded Gulab Singh Kamro.

Voting for the second phase is scheduled from 8 am to 5 pm, except for nine polling stations in the Bindranavagarh assembly constituency, where voting will be held from 7 am to 3 pm.
