Punjab: On Monday, an official said that five members of a family died by suicide in their house at Daroli Khurd village in Jalandhar district of Punjab on Sunday. They added that the victims took the extreme step since they were in debt.
The incident came to light when Manmohan Singh’s son-in-law Sarabjit Singh said that he had been trying to contact the family on phone for some time, but no one picked up the phone.
Giving details about this incident officials said that Sarabjit Singh went to their house, he found Manmohan Singh and his wife hanging by the ceiling fan while the bodies of Jyoti, Gopi and Aman were lying on the bed. The police said everyone, except the three-year-old girl, had marks on their necks.
After receiving information about this incident, Police Station Head Manjeet Singh and Adampur Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Vijay Kunwar Singh reached the spot at 8:20 pm after receiving information about the incident. During the investigation, a suicide note was recovered.
The police have found a suicide note written by Manmohan Singh in which he has attributed mounting debt as the reason behind taking the extreme step. Police officials said all the victims had injury marks on their necks and said it appeared that all of them died by hanging.
They added they found injury marks on Aman’s cheeks, suggesting that someone might have hanged her. His daughter Prabhjot Kaur was married. She had come to her parents’ home some days ago with her daughter Amandeep. A son of Manmohan is married and he lives with his family in Australia.
He has also stated that their bodies be cremated in an electric crematorium. He said he had repaid his other debts, but two instalments of Rs 14,000 and Rs 15,000 were yet to be paid. The note mentioned that the money was in a drawer. The police have found that amount.
After the incident, the official have sent the bodies to the Jalandhar Civil Hospital for post-mortem. The Police said that the five family members who died were identified as Manmohan Singh (55), his wife Sarabjit Kaur, their two daughters, Jyoti (32) and Gopi (31), and Jyoti’s daughter Aman (3).
