Punjab Farmers Geared for Long Protest, Carry 6 Months’ Ration and Diesel

As thousands of farmers march towards Delhi to protest against the government’s agricultural policies, they express their preparedness for a prolonged demonstration, equipped with six months’ worth of ration and sufficient diesel. The borders leading to the national capital have been sealed to prevent their entry, but the farmers remain undeterred, vowing to continue their protest until their demands, including a minimum support price (MSP) for crops, are met.

Harbhajan Singh, a farmer from Punjab’s Gurdaspur, emphasizes the farmers’ determination, stating, “From a needle to a hammer, we have everything we need in our trollies, including tools to break stones. We left our village with six months’ ration with us. We have enough diesel, even for our brothers from Haryana.” Singh, who participated in the 2020 farmers’ protest, asserts that they will not withdraw until all their demands are addressed.

The farmers initiated their march from Fatehgarh Sahib after late-night talks with a government delegation in Chandigarh failed. While agreements were reached on certain issues, including the repeal of the Electricity Act 2020 and compensation for farmers killed in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri, no consensus was achieved on critical demands such as a guaranteed MSP for all crops, farmer loan waiver, and the implementation of Swaminathan Commission recommendations.

Despite Delhi fortifying its borders and imposing traffic restrictions to prevent the farmers’ entry, the protesters remain steadfast in their commitment to pressing for their demands. Concrete blocks, nails, and barricades have been strategically placed at key border points, resulting in traffic jams and increased police presence. The situation reflects the ongoing tensions between farmers and the government, with both sides holding firm on their respective stances.
