The Indian Olympic Association (IOA) has appointed Raghuram Iyer, previously associated with prominent Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises, as its new CEO. The decision was finalized on Friday, January 5, following a rigorous selection process led by the IOA’s nomination committee.
The IOA’s nomination committee highlighted Iyer’s extensive experience and commendable track record in sports management and administration as pivotal factors in his appointment. With a history of leadership roles in renowned IPL teams like Rajasthan Royals, Rising Pune Supergiants, and Lucknow Super Giants, Iyer brings a wealth of expertise to his new role.
The appointment of Raghuram Iyer comes after repeated prompts from the International Olympic Committee (IOC), emphasizing the urgency of the position. PT Usha, the first woman president of the Indian Olympic Association, expressed confidence in Iyer’s capabilities, stating that his profound understanding of the sports landscape would propel Indian sports to greater heights globally.
“We believe that Mr. Raghuram Iyer brings a unique combination of leadership, strategic vision, and a deep understanding of the sports landscape. His appointment is a significant step towards the continued growth and success of Indian sports on the global stage,” remarked Usha.
The appointment of a CEO for the IOA had been awaited for some time, and it was expedited following reminders from the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Raghuram Iyer’s diverse experience, including his roles with IPL teams and other sports entities, positions him as a valuable addition to the IOA leadership.
Prior to Iyer’s appointment, the functions of the CEO were being managed by Kalyan Chaubey, the joint secretary of the IOA and the President of the AIFF (All India Football Federation). With Iyer’s arrival, there is anticipation of enhanced leadership to further elevate Indian sports on the global stage.
