Rajasthan: IAF Tejas fighter aircraft, en-route to Pokharan Bharat Shakti 2024, crashes in Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer: On Tuesday, during an operational training sortie, a Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas of the Indian Air Force (IAF) crashed near Jaisalmer. The pilot of the Tejas jet managed to eject safely before the crash.

After the incident, A Court of Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident. This is the first-ever crash of Tejas. This inquiry aims to uncover the root cause and provide insights into preventing future mishaps.

The pilot’s swift response highlights the effectiveness of the IAF’s safety protocols and the advanced ejection system equipped in the Tejas aircraft. The exercise ‘Bharat Shakti’ displayed an array of indigenous weapon systems and platforms as a demonstration of the prowess of the country, premised on the nation’s Aatmanirbharata initiative.

It will simulate realistic, coordinated, multi-domain operations showcasing the integrated operational capabilities of the Indian Armed Forces to counter threats in land, air, sea, cyber and space domains. The Tejas aircraft, a formidable indigenously developed light combat aircraft, has been the cornerstone of the Indian Air Force’s modernization efforts.

This incident is a reminder of the inherent risks associated with the armed forces’ dedication to operational training and maintaining a strong defense posture. Major equipment and weapon systems participating in the exercise include T-90 (IM) tanks, Dhanush and Sarang gun systems, Akash weapon system, logistics drones, robotic mules, advanced light helicopters (ALHs) and a range of unmanned aerial vehicles.
