New Delhi : As the year unfolds, the Rajya Sabha is gearing up for significant changes with 68 members, including nine Union ministers, set to retire. This impending shift has ignited a competitive environment among political parties eyeing to secure a six-year term in the Upper House of Parliament.
Maharashtra: The state will witness the departure of notable figures such as Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan, MSME Minister Narayan Rane, former Union minister Prakash Javadekar, among others. Political dynamics in Maharashtra will be closely monitored, especially after recent realignments within the NCP and Shiv Sena.
Odisha: Union Ministers Ashwini Vaishnaw and BJD members Prashanta Nanda and Amar Patnaik are among those completing their tenures.
Gujarat: The state will see the exit of Manmohan Singh and Bhupendra Yadav, along with Congress members Naranbhai Rathwa and Amee Yagnik.
Karnataka and Telangana: Four members from Karnataka and three from Telangana are retiring, setting the stage for potential shifts in representation.
West Bengal: Trinamool Congress members Abir Ranjan Biswas, Subhasish Chakraborty, Mohammed Nadimul Haque, Santanu Sen, and Congress member Abhishek Manu Singhvi will conclude their terms.
Bihar: The state will see the tenure completion of RJD members Manoj Kumar Jha and Ahmad Ashfaque Karim, JD(U) members Aneel Prasad Hegde and Bashistha Narain Singh, among others.
The upcoming retirements present a strategic opportunity for parties to reshape their representation in the Rajya Sabha. With Congress eyeing Karnataka and Telangana, where it gained power recently, and BJP aiming to maintain its stronghold, the 2024 elections are poised to be a crucial battleground for political maneuvering and alliance-building.
Four nominated members, including Mahesh Jethmalani, Sonal Mansingh, Ram Shakal, and Rakesh Sinha from the BJP, are set to retire in July, paving the way for potential new faces in the Upper House. This transition further adds to the anticipated political shifts and alliances as parties strategize their nominations and campaign strategies for the forthcoming elections.
