Ruckus at Delhi MCD house after massive fight breaks out between AAP-BJP councillor, standing committee election cancelled

New Delhi: Clashes broke out between Aam Aadmi Party and BJP corporators today during the counting of votes for the election of six members of the Standing Committee, an important body of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD). The uproar that started in the MCD house from noon continued till night. Finally, after nine o’clock in the night, the election of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi was cancelled. Now the House will meet on 27 February.

The counting of votes in the Municipal Corporation today was disrupted when the BJP objected to the invalidation of one vote. First, members of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the BJP climbed on tables and started shouting slogans against each other at the Municipal Corporation of Delhi House. Later, there was a scuffle as well. There was a fight between the councillors. A woman’s hair was also pulled. BJP corporators said that they would not allow recounting.

The BJP obstructed the counting of votes after the mayor declared one vote invalid. However the mayor insisted that the result be declared without the invalid vote. After this chaos spread in the House. Councilors from both sides shouted, punched, kicked, slapped and pushed each other. The kurtas of some councilors were seen torn. A councilor also fell.

AAP leader Shelley Oberoi, who was elected mayor earlier this week after a delay of two months, declared a vote invalid. Due to this, she came under the target of angry BJP councillors. The BJP corporators shouted at him, “You are not conscious.”

Some BJP corporators raised slogans of “Jai Shri Ram” and praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi. His rivals from the Aam Aadmi Party retaliated, chanting “Aam Aadmi Party Zindabad, Arvind Kejriwal Zindabad”.

Mayor Shelly Oberoi said- One side is ready for recounting while the other side is not ready, so now I am not doing recounting. The result is being created without an invalid vote.

After this, there was a continuous deadlock in the counting of votes for the standing committee elections in MCD. Both sides kept accusing each other and also kept on scuffling.

The mayor came to the house after a prolonged standoff. Meanwhile, the BJP councilors had left the House and only Aam Aadmi Party councilors were present. On the instructions of Mayor Shaili Oberoi, all the officers were called to the house.
