Senior Congress leader Sushil kumar Shinde retires from active politics, hands over legacy to daughter Praniti

Former Chief Minister of Maharashtra Sushil Kumar Shinde has decided to step away from active politics. He has announced that he has now retired from politics. However, Shinde has also expressed his desire that his daughter contest the elections from Solapur seat.

Mumbai: Former Union Home Minister Maharashtra and veteran Congress leader Sushil Kumar Shinde has announces his retirement from active politics. During an event, the former Union minister made this announcement, he has also expressed his daughter Praniti Shinde’s desire to contest elections from Solapur seat. Putting forward his daughter’s name, Shinde said, “My daughter (Praniti Shinde) will contest the 2024 elections. I will be present wherever I am needed.”

Daughter Parineeti Shinde has been MLA from Solapur three times. And the former Union minister was MP from Solapur seat three times, was the Chief Minister of Maharashtra for a short period between January 2003 and November 2004. After leaving this post, he was appointed the Governor of Andhra Pradesh and he remained in this post till 2006. After this he was included in the Union Cabinet.

Shinde was the country’s Energy Minister in the Manmohan Singh government. He was assigned the Home Ministry in 2012 after the then Home Minister P Chidambaram went back to the Finance Ministry after the Mumbai attacks (26/11).

42-year-old Praniti Shinde is a three-time MLA from Solapur City Central Assembly seat and a member of Indian National Congress. While reforming the party’s Maharashtra executive in 2021, Congress appointed Sushil Kumar Shinde’s daughter Parineeti Shinde as the working president of the state unit of Western Maharashtra.

Sushil kumar Shinde’s Political journey

In 1971, Shinde became a member of the Congress Party. He won the Maharashtra state assembly elections in 1974, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1992. August 2004–(General) by-election, September 2004 to October 2004–(General). Shinde was elected to Rajya Sabha from Maharashtra during July 1992 to March 1998. In 1999, he acted as campaign manager of the Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh.

In 2002, Shinde lost the election for the post of Vice-President of India contesting against the National Democratic Alliance candidate Bhairon Singh Shekhawat. He served as the chief minister of Maharashtra from 2003 to 2004. He was appointed the Governor of Andhra Pradesh on 30 October 2004 replacing Surjit Singh Barnala, who became the Governor of Tamil Nadu. He left the office on January 2006.
