Smriti Irani criticises Mamata Banerjee over systemic sexual exploitation in Sandeshkhali

Kolkata: Union Minister Smriti Irani today criticized the Mamata Banerjee government over the allegations by women in South Bengal’s Sandeshkhali and declared that “young Hindu married women” were being targeted by Trinamool Congress goons. There has been a political uproar in the state over the allegations of women who have accused a local Trinamool leader of systematic sexual exploitation.

The man in question, Zilla Parishad member Sheikh Shajahan – who is also accused of land grabbing – is on the run. He is also wanted by the Enforcement Directorate in connection with the alleged PDS scam. The trigger for these allegations is a harrowing tale of land grabbing and sexual assault, perpetrated by local strongman Shajahan Sheikh and his supporters, who are reportedly affiliated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC). A group of women from Sandeshkhali have come forward, demanding the immediate arrest of Sheikh and his associates

These women, symbols of courage in the face of adversity, have alleged that Shaikh and his gang forcibly occupied their land and sexually assaulted them. His call for justice has echoed across the country, casting a long shadow over the TMC government.

In response to these allegations, Union Minister Smriti Irani has launched a scathing attack on Banerjee, accusing her of being involved in the ‘genocide of Hindus’ and trading the dignity of vulnerable communities for political gains.

The Governor of West Bengal has visited the unrest-hit area, while senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari and other party MLAs have been prevented from visiting the area due to prohibitory orders. This step has further increased the tension between BJP and TMC.

In a dramatic development, BJP MLAs, including opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari, were suspended from the West Bengal Assembly. They were protesting against the TMC government over the unrest in Sandeshkhali. The MLAs, wearing white shirts with ‘We are with Sandeshkhali’, were suspended by the Speaker after a motion was moved by TMC MLA Shobhandeb Chatterjee.

Shajahan Sheikh, the primary accused in this case, is absconding since last month. His house was raided by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with an alleged ration scam, following which the mob attacked the raiding party.

The women of Sandeshkhali are continuously demanding justice, their voices are echoing in the corridors of power. As the political drama unfolds, their plight serves as a reminder of the human cost of power struggles and the desperate need for accountability.

The Sandeshkhali incident has surfaced as a flashpoint. Allegations of sexual harassment and land grab have cast a dark cloud over the TMC government, with Union Minister Smriti Irani accusing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of allowing her party workers to commit these
