Supreme Court Requests Report from Central Air Quality Panel on Delhi-NCR Pollution

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court of India took significant steps to address the pressing issue of air pollution in and around Delhi. The bench, comprising Justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Sudhanshu Dhulia, called for a report from the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) concerning the measures being undertaken to combat air pollution in the region.

This action was prompted by the submissions made by senior advocate Aparajita Singh, who is actively assisting the top court as an amicus curiae on matters related to pollution. Singh emphasized the critical nature of the air pollution problem, particularly during the approaching winter season, and also drew attention to the issue of crop residue burning.

The bench acknowledged the gravity of the situation, highlighting the “serious problem” of air pollution during the upcoming winter months and the persistent concern of crop residue burning. Singh further informed the court that these issues are currently under the jurisdiction of the CAQM.

In response, the Supreme Court issued a directive to the CAQM, urging them to promptly furnish a report detailing the steps being taken to control air pollution in Delhi and its surrounding areas.

The matter has been scheduled for further hearings on October 31, emphasizing the court’s commitment to addressing the critical issue of air pollution and its dedication to seeking effective solutions to mitigate its harmful effects on public health and the environment.
