Surat court rejects Congress leader Rahul Gandhi plea for stay on conviction in defamation case

New Delhi: The Sessions Court of Surat today gave a big blow to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's petition against the sentence in the 'Modi Surname' case. The petition sought a stay on his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his remarks on the 'Modi surname', which the court turned down.

New Delhi: On Thursday, The Sessions Court of Surat today gave a big blow to Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s petition against the sentence in the ‘Modi Surname’ case. The petition sought a stay on his conviction in a criminal defamation case over his remarks on the ‘Modi surname’, which the court turned down.Today, Judge Robin Moghera pronounced the verdict on the plea filed for staying the two-year sentence of Rahul Gandhi.

No change was made in Rahul’s sentence in the case and the petition was dismissed. Now Rahul Gandhi’s lawyer is going to appeal in the High Court.Surat court has sentenced Rahul Gandhi to 2 years imprisonment for wrongly commenting on Modi’s surname. The sentence was handed down after the court found him guilty in the ongoing defamation case against him.

However, the Surat Sessions Court granted bail to the Congress leader on April 3 after Rahul filed a plea against the sentence.Rahul Gandhi was a Lok Sabha MP from Wayanad, but was disqualified after a Surat lower court sentenced him to two years in jail on March 23.

However, the sessions court later granted bail to the former MP and also issued notice to complainant Purnesh Modi and the state government on the Congress leader’s plea to stay his conviction. The court heard both the parties and then reserved the order for April 20.

Let us tell you that this case relates to a comment made by Rahul Gandhi using the nickname ‘Modi’ while addressing a campaign event ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. In April 2019, at a rally in Kolar, Karnataka, Rahul took a dig at Prime Minister Narendra Modi and said, “How are all thieves named Modi?”In this case, Gujarat BJP leader Purnesh Modi filed a defamation case against Rahul Gandhi, for which he was sentenced to two years. The BJP termed Rahul’s comments against Modi and the entire OBC community.
