Karanpur Assembly election: In the aftermath of the Karanpur Assembly election results, Rajasthan Minister of State (MoS) Surendra Pal Singh submitted his resignation from the state Cabinet on Monday. Singh’s decision to step down comes after his defeat in the Karanpur assembly seat election held recently.
Congress candidate Rupinder Singh Koonar secured victory in the Karanpur constituency with 94,950 votes, surpassing Singh’s count of 83,667 votes. Singh, who represented the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), had been appointed to the Bhajanlal Sharma ministry on December 30, shortly before the polling on January 5.
Having joined the Bhajanlal Sharma ministry on December 30, Singh was appointed as Minister of State (Independent Charge) and held portfolios such as Agriculture Marketing Board, Indira Gandhi Canal Department, and Minority Affairs Department. The BJP nominee had to secure election as an MLA within six months of assuming the ministerial position.
Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma facilitated the resignation process by forwarding Singh’s resignation letter, which was promptly accepted by the Governor with immediate effect, as confirmed by a Raj Bhavan spokesperson.
The polls for 199 out of the 200 assembly seats in Rajasthan took place on November 25. However, the election in Karanpur was deferred due to the demise of Congress candidate Gurmeet Singh Koonar. Subsequently, the Congress party fielded Gurmeet Singh Koonar’s son, Rupinder Singh Koonar, who ultimately emerged triumphant in the delayed election.
