Uttar Pradesh Government Launches Active Tuberculosis Patient Search Campaign to Eradicate TB

The Uttar Pradesh government, under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath, is taking proactive steps to eliminate tuberculosis (TB) from the state. As part of the National Tuberculosis Elimination Programme, the government will initiate the Active Tuberculosis Patient Search Campaign from November 23 to December 5, covering every corner of the state. The campaign aims to conduct door-to-door screenings to identify potential TB patients.

The meticulously planned campaign will focus on screening 20% of urban and rural settlements, as well as high-risk areas in each district. Upon identification, individuals suspected of having TB will undergo comprehensive tests, including sputum examination and other essential diagnostics. Immediate treatment will be administered upon confirmation of a positive diagnosis.

Dr. Pinky Joval, Mission Director of the National Health Mission, Uttar Pradesh, has issued guidelines to all district magistrates, outlining the campaign’s protocols. The initiative will encompass various institutions such as orphanages, old age homes, women’s shelters, educational institutions, prisons, and public places like markets and construction sites.

Expanding the testing scope and ensuring prompt treatment are vital components of the effort to eliminate TB. Patients diagnosed with TB will also be tested for blood sugar and HIV, with their information updated on the Ni-kshay portal. Additionally, TB patients will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 500 to support proper nutrition during their treatment period.

Dr. Shailendra Bhatnagar, Joint Director (TB)/State TB Control Programme Officer, emphasized the importance of early detection. Individuals experiencing symptoms such as persistent cough for more than two weeks, along with fever, weight loss, and loss of appetite, are urged to undergo a free TB test at government hospitals. Dr. Bhatnagar reassured that TB is entirely curable, urging patients to follow medical advice and complete their prescribed medication course. TB medications can be obtained free of charge from TB hospitals, DOT centers, or local ASHA workers.

He further highlighted the essential role of the ongoing Active Tuberculosis Patient Search Campaign and sought cooperation from panchayat representatives. Gram pradhans in TB-free panchayats are actively engaged in supporting the campaign’s objectives, emphasizing the collective effort needed to achieve a TB-free Uttar Pradesh.
