Varanasi Court Allows Hindu Worship in Sealed Basement of Gyanvapi Mosque

A Varanasi city court has granted permission for Hindu petitioners to worship in the previously sealed basement of the Gyanvapi mosque. The judge, retiring today, ordered the necessary arrangements, including removing barricades, to be completed within seven days. The court specified that priests from the Vishwanath Temple should conduct prayers. Last month, the Allahabad High Court rejected petitions challenging the restoration of the temple at the site, leading to this latest development.

Worship Permission Granted: The Varanasi city court has ruled that Hindu petitioners can worship inside the sealed basement of the Gyanvapi mosque. The judge instructed the completion of necessary arrangements, including the removal of barricades, within seven days. Prayers are to be conducted by priests from the Vishwanath Temple.

Previous Claims: Vishnu Shankar Jain, representing Hindu women petitioners, previously claimed that debris from statues of Hindu gods was found during an Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) survey. It was also asserted that parts of a pre-existing structure, deemed a temple with 34 inscriptions, were used in the mosque’s construction.

Allahabad High Court Decision: Last month, the Allahabad High Court rejected all petitions challenging civil suits seeking the restoration of the temple at the Gyanvapi mosque site. The mosque committee’s petitions were dismissed, setting the stage for the recent court ruling.

Background of the Case: The overall case involves the Gyanvapi mosque located near the Kashi Vishwanath Temple. A 1991 suit, filed on behalf of the Adi Vishveswar Virajman deity, sought control of the disputed premises and permission to worship. The recent decision is seen as a significant development in the ongoing legal battle.
