Violent Clashes in Haldwani: FIR Against Thousands, Curfew Continues

Violence Erupts in Haldwani: Violent clashes erupted in Uttarakhand’s Haldwani following an anti-encroachment drive that led to the demolition of an illegal madrasa, mosque, and other structures. A First Information Report (FIR) has been filed against 5,000 people, including 19 named individuals, in connection with the clashes that claimed six lives and left over 100 injured.

Continued Police Presence and Arrests

Over 1,000 police personnel remain deployed in Haldwani, close to Nainital, as a curfew is in effect. Authorities emphasize that the demolished structures were on government land, and the anti-encroachment actions were carried out following court orders.

FIR Details and Arrests

The FIR includes charges against both named and unidentified individuals involved in the violence. Law enforcement authorities have started making arrests, with several people already in custody. The search for other miscreants is underway.

Clash Details and Police Response

The clashes unfolded on Thursday in the Banbhoolpura area during the anti-encroachment drive. Six fatalities and numerous injuries were reported as officials faced resistance from residents. Stones were allegedly thrown from rooftops, and some rioters displayed gunshot wounds.

Use of Force and National Security Act

Orders to open fire were issued with instructions to shoot rioters in the leg when the mob attacked the police station, as confirmed by Nainital District Magistrate Vandana Singh. Uttarakhand police chief Abhinav Kumar stated that action under the National Security Act would be taken against those involved in attacks on police personnel.

Political Responses and Chief Minister’s Visit

BJP MPs termed the Haldwani violence a “conspiracy” and called for strict action against those responsible. In Parliament, Indian Union Muslim League MP ET Mohammed Basheer expressed concerns, emphasizing that such incidents should be avoided for the well-being of the country.

Chief Minister’s Assessment

Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami visited Haldwani and described the violence as a “planned attack.” He noted the stockpiling of arms, stones, and petrol bombs, suggesting premeditation in the clashes. Efforts are underway to restore normalcy within the next 24 hours.
