Assam/Dergaon: Early on Wednesday, 14 people lost their lives while 27 others were seriously injured in a devastating road accident in Assam’s Dergaon. A bus carrying 45 people collided with a truck loaded with coal near its destination Balijan. The autobus was carrying a picnic party from Athkhelia, the journey had started around 3 o’clock.

Police said the accident unfolded when a bus carrying a picnic party comprising 45 members to Tinsukia’s Tilinga Mandir collided with the truck in Dergaon.

Police reports indicate that the autobus was taking people from Athkhelia to Balijan for a picnic. The journey started first thing in the morning at around 3 o’clock. The bus was near its destination when the collision occurred.

Police rushed to the site, rescued the injured passengers and admitted them to the Jorhat Medical College. An official said that several injured people were in a critical condition.

They recovered the bodies of the 14 passengers who died on the spot and sent them for post-mostem examinations. Police are investigating the matter.

This tragic incident has once again highlighted the importance of road safety, especially during the early hours of the day. The risks in question are much greater during these hours, as this accident shows.

The accident has raised concerns about information measures in place for road travel, particularly during the early hours of the morning when visibility is low. This incident simply serves as a sobering reminder of the dangers that lurk on the roads, even in the absence of dense traffic.
