A strong 6.5 magnitude of earthquake hits Indonesia, no tsunami alert issued

Jakarta: A strong magnitude-6.5 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s west Java province on Saturday night, without triggering giant waves, the country’s meteorology, climatology and geophysics agency said.

The agency said that the quake struck at 23:29 Jakarta time (1629 GMT) on Saturday, with its epicentre located 151km southwest of Garut regency and at a depth of 10km.

The agency added that the tremor was felt in Indonesia’s capital Jakarta and nearby Banten province, as well as Central Java, Yogyakarta and East Java provinces.

According to the information received by agency, the quake was measured at IV MMI (modified Mercali intensity) in Sukabumi city and Tasikmalaya city in West Java province, and III to IV MMI in Bandung city, the capital of West Java province.

The agency did not issue any tsunami warning as the tremor was not strong enough to trigger potentially huge waves, according to the information. Indonesia, an archipelago nation, is vulnerable to earthquakes as it lies in a quake-prone zone known as the “Pacific Ring of Fire”.
