A recent report by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR) sheds light on the legislative productivity and engagement levels of the 17th Lok Sabha and its members. Released on Tuesday, the report unveils key insights into bill clearance rates, parliamentary attendance, and active participation across states and political parties.
Among the noteworthy findings, the report reveals that out of the 222 bills passed during the tenure of the 17th Lok Sabha, a remarkable 45 bills were cleared on the same day they were introduced in the House. Notable legislations include The Jammu and Kashmir Appropriation (No. 2) Bill and The Central Goods and Services Tax (Amendment) Bill, 2023.
The analysis delves into the engagement levels of Members of Parliament (MPs), highlighting their attendance records and participation in parliamentary proceedings. On average, an MP asked 165 questions and attended 189 out of 273 sittings.
Disparities in attendance are evident across states, with Chhattisgarh MPs exhibiting the highest average attendance, while Arunachal Pradesh MPs recorded the lowest.
The report also scrutinizes engagement levels among political parties, with Maharashtra MPs emerging as the most vocal, and the NCP standing out for the number of questions raised per MP. Conversely, AAP members had the lowest attendance, with Telugu Desam Party (TDP) members displaying higher attendance rates.
Ten MPs are recognized for their active participation in parliamentary proceedings, with BJP’s Balurghat MP Sukanta Majumdar leading the pack by posing 596 questions. Questions largely centered around critical areas such as health and family welfare, agriculture, and railways.
