Archery WC stage 1: India win three gold medals to sweep compound team events

Shanghai: On Saturday, in Shanghai, India compound archers wins a hat-trick of gold medals to clean sweep the team events at the ongoing Archery World Cup Stage 1.

Shanghai: On Saturday, in Shanghai, India compound archers wins a hat-trick of gold medals to clean sweep the team events at the ongoing Archery World Cup Stage 1.

The women’s team led the charge as the trio of Jyothi Surekha Vennam, Aditi Swami and Parneet Kaur dropped just four points to trounce Italy 236-225 in the women’s compound team event to open their account with a gold in the season-opening global showpiece. They got the better of Italy’s Marcella Tonioli, Irene Franchini and Elisa Roner.

The men’s team of Abhishek Verma, Priyansh and Prathamesh Fuge produced a similar display of dominance against Mike Schloesser, Sil Pater and Stef Willems of the Netherlands and came out victorious by 238-231. The mixed team completed the sweep when the second-seeded Jyothi and Abhishek warded off a late resurgence from their Estonian rivals — Lisell Jaatma and Robin Jaatma — to win 158-157 in a thrilling finish

The Indian men’s team dropped just two points. The top-seeded women’s team lost only four points from 24 arrows to beat sixth seeds Italy. Jyothi, Aditi and Preneet missed perfect 10s only twice in the first three ends of six arrows and took a commanding 178-171 lead over Marcella Tonioli, Irene Franchini and Alisa Roner.

The Indians lost two points but it did not matter as they won the gold by a margin of 11 points in the fourth end .The fourth-seeded men’s team put up a near-faultless performance to beat their Dutch rivals. They started with a perfect round of 60 and lost only two points in the next two ends before they sealed the defeat with another perfect 60 in the final set of six arrows.
