Bengaluru: 52 Dead, trees uprooted as heavy rains lead to water-logging in parts of the city

Pre-Monsoon: It is raining in many parts of Karnataka. Bengaluru is most affected by this. There have been 52 deaths since April as informed by Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah. While some casualties were reported due to the falling trees, some died due to thunder strikes or got washed away in rainwater.

Bangalore: Torrential rains have caused havoc in Karnataka’s capital Bengaluru. Many trees in the city have been uprooted due to the rain. Due to water-logging, public life became busy. The pre-monsoon rains in Bengaluru continue to cause havoc, with 52 deaths recorded over a period between April to June, as informed by Karnataka chief minister Siddaramaiah. While some casualties were reported due to the falling trees, some died due to thunder strikes or got washed away in rainwater.

Five other family members and the driver of a submerged car were rescued by fire brigade and emergency service personnel with the help of people who reached there to help. All the people in the car were taken to St. Martha’s Hospital where doctors declared the girl named Bhanurekha brought dead. Without realizing the water level in the underpass, the car driver tried to move forward but midway the car was almost submerged. In a hurry, the people sitting in the car came out to save themselves.

Due to the rain, the water level started rising. As soon as the family members raised an alarm for help, people from nearby came forward to save them. People tried to get them out of there with the help of sarees and ropes. Sources said the trapped people tried to escape but were unsuccessful. Two of them were pulled out by emergency service personnel, while the others were brought out using a ladder.

There was heavy rain and hailstorm in Bengaluru on Sunday afternoon. Due to strong wind and rain, trees in many areas were uprooted and fell on the road. Due to which the traffic was disrupted for some time. However, the administration immediately removed the tree from the road.

Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday held a video-conferencing meeting with all district commissioners on disaster management in view of the monsoon season. He himself gave this information. The CM said, “An ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh each has been announced for the families of the persons who died due to heavy rains in the state.”

During his first meeting with top police officers after the Congress government came to power, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah warned that the officials concerned would be held responsible if the law and order situation deteriorated in the state.
