Renowned Indian boxer, Mary Kom, declared her retirement from professional boxing on Wednesday, citing age restrictions as the primary reason. The six-time world champion, who turned 41 in November 2023, acknowledged the International Boxing Association’s (IBA) rule preventing athletes aged 40 and above from participating in professional tournaments.

Expressing her continued passion for the sport, Mary Kom revealed her intention to stay connected to boxing. While acknowledging her inability to compete due to age restrictions, she mentioned considering a move to professional boxing. “I still want to compete and represent the country. But I am not being able to compete this year because of the age limit,” she said, indicating a potential transition to the professional circuit.

Despite facing setbacks, including a major injury and missing out on competitions like the Commonwealth Games, Asian Games, and World Championships, Mary Kom emphasized her enduring spirit. She expressed a desire to continue playing for another one to four years, showcasing her unwavering commitment to the sport.

Mary Kom’s illustrious career includes numerous milestones, making her one of the most decorated athletes in boxing history. She is the only female boxer to win six world titles and holds the distinction of being the only athlete, male or female, to secure eight medals in the World Championships.

First Indian female boxer to win a Gold medal in the Asian Games (2014).
First Indian female boxer to secure Gold in the Commonwealth Games (2018).
Olympic Glory: Bagged a Bronze in the 51kg category at the 2012 London Olympics, marking India’s first-ever boxing medal in the Summer Olympics.
